Where does Potter Poultry get the chickens that they sell?
We buy all of our poultry as day-old chicks from reputable, certified, large-scale hatcheries. Hatcheries include Ideal Poultry, Meyer Hatchery, Hoover’s Hatchery, and Cackle Hatchery.
If Potter Poultry buys their chicks from a hatchery, couldn’t I just do the same and pay much less for my chickens?
Absolutely! Chicks are vulnerable when they are young to illness, predation, temperature changes, etc so many people do not want to deal with raising chicks. Potter Poultry raises chicks past the most vulnerable stage so that you don’t have to! We generally start selling groups of chicks at 8 weeks of age. At this time, they are fully feathered and can withstand environmental changes. If you are up to raising the chicks from day one, we encourage you to do so.
Does Potter Poultry incubate and hatch any chicks on-site?
Not at this time.
Can I reserve some chicks until I can make it to the farm?
In general, we do not hold or reserve chicks or pullets. They are available on a first-come-first-serve basis. If you let us know you are on your way for some specific chicks or pullets, we will hold them until you get here.
How can I be sure that my chicks or pullets are healthy?
We spend time interacting with the chickens daily and are constantly on the lookout for health issues. We will never sell a chicken that we suspect is ill. If you raise chickens, you will find out that all flocks experience some health issues over time. We monitor our flocks for any sign of distress and separate any chick or pullet that displays any sign of illness.
Do you provide a health guarantee?
If you buy chickens from Potter Poultry and notice signs of illness, do not hesitate to contact us and we will take the chickens back and refund your money. This guarantee is good for 72 hours after you purchase your poultry.
I have a chicken(s) that I no longer can care for or no longer want. Does Potter Poultry want to adopt these chickens into their flock?
Unfortunately, no. As a means of protecting the health integrity of the flock, Potter Poultry accepts no outside poultry onto the property.
Does Potter Poultry have any roos or roosters?
We buy sexed pullets from the hatcheries in almost all cases. The hatcheries are rarely 100% accurate sexing chicks so we generally end up with a few roosters for sale.
What if I received a rooster and I wanted pullets?
Potter Poultry will replace any roosters sold as pullets free of charge with an equivalent pullet. We may not always have the same breed available. Generally, by the time that pullets leave for new homes, we are 99% certain of sex although a rare exception may occur.
